Product Information ZC-X230

Dear Customer,

thank you for having purchased a ZC-X230 Free Software Laptop!

This Machine is a very special device, for it runs with free BIOS software right from power-up!

However, no system is perfect, so isn't this one. Please get familiar with your computer carefully. Please avoid modifications of your system settings without having accumulated some basic background knowledge in advance.

Due to the original hardware setup, this machine still has some proprietary, binary blobs in use.

Scope of Delivery

If you need to see how your ROM image has been created, these are your options:

Boot Options

When your system boots, a first GRUB menu will pop up for two seconds. Hit any key in order to access the menu, otherwise the start of your operating system via "[g] Search GRUB2 Configuration File (Internal Disk)" will be selected automatically.

  • In order to modify your Hardware Configuration Settings, invoke secondary payload NVRAMCUI with hotkey ‘n’. Please switch off the Laptop’s RF Kill Switch beforehand to avoid freezes.
  • In order to start a Trisquel-USB-Live-Image, select "[u] Search ISOLINUX Configuration File (USB)".
  • In order to start a recent Debian-USB-Drive, select "[s] Search GRUB2 Configuration File (USB)".
  • In order to access the onboard TPM Configuration, select "[b] Boot via SeaBIOS", hit <ESC>, hit <t>.
  • In order to cycle through pre-flashed background images, select "[i] Cycle through Background Images". Typical images are Zerocat’s logo or a photo of the flash procedure itself. A simple black background is included as well, which might be useful if you want to enter the GRUB Console.

ROM Updates

Updating your ROM via “flashrom” user space utility might be dangerous – Use an external SPI Flash Programmer instead. Please be aware that you are updating your ROM image on your own responsibility!
